Enhancement Shaman DPS (3.3.3)

Post  Ozmademos on Fri May 14, 2010 11:55 pm

This post is intended to help those not familiar with Enhancement Shaman mechanics to get a simple overview

Spec
11/52/0 is the spec

Here's the link: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#hVhhZhxxIoxdhhzsRuVo:hfZmM

Just cut and paste it. It leaves a few points open for you to choose something extra...
***Note: The Link has Glyphs Already in there for You***

A few talents in this tree are left over from when Shamans were viable off-tank back in Old WoW (no... really they were). But you wont need them for raiding now Very Happy

Elemental Fury
This is a good buff to your AoE damage, if you happen to want to focus more on this.

Elemental Focus
Not hugely important, unless you're having significant mana issues, but Shamanistic Rage makes having this fairly unnecessary.

Unleashed Rage
The extra 10% raid buff is nice, but it wont stack with other 10% AP raid buffs (Abomination's Might, Trueshot Aura). The Expertise is nice too because it prevents some dodging. Overall, not too shabby to pick this one up.

Duel Wield Specialization
Duel Wielding is notorious for needing more hit than normal 2-hander dps. And, since your best dps is done while Duel Wielding, this might be a good talent to pick up if you need the hit.

Frozen Power
This talent is more picked up for the rooting effect. The slowing effect from Frostbrand attack is not shown (that I know of) to affect bosses.

Glyphs
The Glyphs given are the most popular ones. After that is:

Glyph of Lava Lash
Your off-hand weapon should have Flametongue on it anyhow, and Lava Lash is a nice bit of instant damage.

Glyph of Lightning Shield
On the surface this might not seem useful, since you shouldnt be taking damage from a boss, but it works well with the Static Shock and Improved Shields talents.

Glyph of Flametongue
Again, Flametongue is going to be on your off-hand, so this just gives you a flat 2% crit.

Minor Glyphs
No Shaman Minor Glyphs contribute to your damage, so it's purely your choice! Generally, Glyph of Water Walking and Glyph if Renewed Life are chosen, because they save you the reagent.

Stats

Hit: you are in the unique position of being a melee caster... but unlike the other melee caster (paladins) you will need to get as close to the spell hit cap of 17%, or 446 hit rating, as possible. But, dont freak out just yet. Raids may have some kind of caster there to increase the hit chance of other casters (boomkins/shadow priests), so your require drops to about 14%. Add in there that you're a Draenei and it drops again to 13%, or 341 hit rating. Still kind of steep, but there it is.

Agility: gives you all your Attack Power and Crit. super important stat

Expertise: you should get the required 6.5% expertise cap (214 expertise rating), but if you spec into Unleashed Rage, then this drops to 140 expertise rating.

Crit: it's important, but not as much as other stats.

Haste: most important stat under Agility. you want to swing faster. each swing is a chance at important procs, so you want to be swinging as quickly as possible (even with Windfury)

Attack Power: you'll get it from Agility and Intellect mostly. Strength also gives Shamans Attack Power but not crit, and since the itemized armor for Shamans is Mail with Agility and Intellect, chances are you wont be stacking Strength or going for Strength-based gear anytime soon Smile

Armor: wear AP mail gear, because it has intellect. You dont want to gem for Int, but the intellect from the mail gear contributes directly to your attack power (via Mental Dexterity), so dont pick up leather items. They're not for you.

Gems

Meta: Relentless (+21 Agil and +3% crit dmg)
Red: Delicate (+20 Agil), or Glinting (+10 Agil and +10 hit) if you're not hit capped
Yellow: Deft (+10 Agil and +10 Haste), use this only in yellow spaces if the socket bonus nets more Agil or Haste or AP, otherwise just use one of the solid Red gems.
Blue: Nightmare Tear (obviously you can only get just one, so put it in a good slot!)

Priority (not a rotation)

1 ) Lightning Bolt (only at 5 stacks of Maelstrom)
2 ) Storm Strike
3 ) Flame Shock (only reapply when the debuff is falling off)
4 ) Earth Shock
5 ) Lava Lash
Note: Use of Spirit Wolves can be situational, but should be used as often as possible (be sure not to use certain abilities like their taunt unless you're soloing). Main-Hand weapons should have Windfury, Off-Hands should have Flametongue.

Fast weapons are super bad for shaman dps. You want 2.6 or slower to maximize windfury effectiveness. That means no daggers, unless your only other choices are 3+ tiers (40+ ilvls) lower. 2handers are only marginally better than daggers at best and are often worse so don't use them either. Realistically speaking, Dual Wield Spec and Unleashed Rage are mandatory talents; Frozen Power is only used in PvP, Blizzard has confirmed that the secondary effects don't work on mobs that matter.

For your priority queue, only use flame shock as often as necessary to keep the dot on your target. Also, you'll want to avoid EVER having the stormstrike debuff fall off your target because it means a 20% dps drop for any other ability while it's down - even maelstrom hasted lightning bolts should be delayed to reapply stormstrike. On raid bosses wolves can be used without fear since they're taunt immune but their taunt is something to be aware of, and probably build a macro to disable, in normal instances. Shamanistic Rage should be used anytime you see 40% mana which should be a lot if you're doing it right.

A point of interest and major correcton for stats: attack power is gained from 3 stats for Shamans - 1 each from Strength and Agility and Intellect (via 3/3 Mental Dexterity).
