Shadow Priest DPS (3.3.3)

Post  Ozmademos on Mon May 10, 2010 5:10 pm

This post is intended to help those not familiar with Shadow Priest mechanics to get a simple overview

Spec
8/0/51 is the spec

Here's the link: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#bVcZZGxfVoczcfqczA:hqZV

Just cut and paste it. It leaves a few points open for you to choose something extra...
***Note: The Link has Glyphs Already in there for You***

Improved Power Word: Fortitude
Best talent to grab for raid utility. Pretty much expected of any priest.

Meditation
Back in BC, Shadow Priests started getting the unofficial title of "Mana Battery" because they generated so much mana; almost endless amounts. This is still much the same case now. You shouldnt have any significant mana issues to need to get this talent.

Inner Focus
This is popular because it basically just gives you a bunch of crit on an ability for free. Use it with Mind Blast to proc a few other dps boosting abilities.

Shadow Affinity
Fade gives you a really nice aggro drop as is. Shadow used to have alot of threat issues, but they seem to have been resolved for Wrath, so this talent isnt really necessary.

Improved Psychic Scream
You should NEVER fear something in a raid, even if it is coming after you (just Fade)... but this is needed to get Silence, which can be super useful in some situations.

Silence
Like I said above, super useful in some sitations. This will work on some boss mechanics.

Shadow Reach
This isnt all that great of a talent, especially now that all the Shadow abilities were extended to at least 30 yards. Originally Mind Flay was only something like 20 yards... pretty close. This will not extend the radius of Mind Sear or Psychic Scream, only the distance at which you need to stand to hit them.

Veiled Shadows
Your Fade is your main aggro drop, so it's good to talent it. The cooldown reduction on your Shadow Fiend isnt so much for the mana regen, but in fact your Shadow Fiend can be used for a little extra dmg now and then!

Improved Vampiric Embrace
Great for raid utility, but remember you dont want people thinking you're just a healer masquerading as a dpser! =D

Improved Shadowform
This is mostly PvP oriented, so dont use up the points here unless you feel it's really necessary to do so.

Psychic Horror
There are some boss encounters (and almost all weapon-wielding mobs/players), where this will work really well. It's a good utility spell if you find a means to use a GCD to use it.

Dispersion
Again, you wont really need the mana regen from this, but the damage reduction could be useful in some encounters where there's alot of raid damage all at one time.

Glyphs

Glyph of Shadow Word: Pain
You shouldnt really have the mana issues to need this Glyph.

Glyph of Shadow Word: Death
Right now, SW: Death isnt all that great. It's relatively low damage, and used more just to throw at the boss if you have to move suddenly and need something instant cast. For Cataclysm though, this will become a 'finisher' like Kill Shot or Execute, but probably be something akin to Drain Soul for an Affliction Warlock.

Glyph of Mind Sear
This is the big AoE move for Shadow Priests, and this Glyph is really useful for places or times where you have alot of trash mobs. It can be somewhat situational for this reason but overall a dps gain.

Glyph of Dispersion
This depends on if you get the Dispersion talent, and how often you tend to use it... Glyph of Mind Sear is probably better.

Minor Glyphs
It's really up to you! Typically all priests go for the Glyph of Levitate because it saves the reagent.

Stats

Hit: you'll need 11%, or 289 hit rating (10% with a Draenei). Spell Hit cap is still 17% like any caster, but you'll get 3% up front from Shadow Focus and another 3% with Misery. Lucky you!

Spell Power: most important stat

Haste: second most important stat. you want your DoTs hitting hard and fast. also contributes to faster Mind Flay. Almost on par with Spell Power in importance.

Crit: it's close, but not as good as haste. Your crits will trigger some important stuff, but Mind Flay will move so fast and hit so often that you'll be able to get plenty of crits from this.

Spirit: hopefully it's on your gear, but if not, dont panic.
Intellect: least important stat. it'll come from gear and stuff. dont go out of your way to stack it.

Armor: cloth (probably with hit, or crit/haste if hit capped)

Gems

Meta: Chaotic (+21 Crit and +3% crit dmg)
Red: Runed (+23 SP) or Veiled (+12 SP and +10 hit) if you're not hit capped
Yellow: Rigid (+20 Hit), Veiled (+12 SP and +10 Hit), or Reckless (+12 SP and +10 Haste)
Blue: Purified (+12 SP and +10 Spirit), but really only two to activate the meta.

Priority (not a rotation)

1 ) Vampiric Touch
2 ) Devouring Plague
3 ) Mind Blast
4 ) Mind Flay
5 ) Shadow Word: Pain (cast once since you'll have the talents to refresh it, but always make sure you cast it after you have 5 stacks of Shadow Weaving)

You'll be casting Mind Flay most often, but just keep an eye on buffs and debuffs.

A few very important points here - note that the original post said not to put up SW:P unless there are 5 stacks of shadow weaving. That is critical for maximizing dps. Putting it 5th in the rotation generally ensures that you'll have 5 stacks up. There is also a sweet spot for when to mind sear, and when to just dot up adds. I believe 3 or less targets just dot up and use normal rotation, more than that and mind sear will maximize dps. It's a bit tricky to learn, because instinctively you want to use mind sear and see all those numbers flying up.

As with any spec or rotation change - use the dummies! My dps went up about 1k after spending an hour at them back when I really tried to learn my shadow rotation.
